A Sárköz

The folk costumes of Sárköz

This costume has the oldest form, the most ornaments and made of the most expensive materials among the Hungarian folk costumes. The skirts are made of silk and velvet, with rich decorations. The women of Sárköz have always been leaders in forming and embroidering, we can find every style, technique and ornaments. The people of Sárköz have adopted the effects of the genteel fashion, the weavers and the neighbouring peoples and assimilated these individually. At the same time their costumes remained a typical peasant clothing: it differed according to gender, age and marital status and adjusted to the different seasons, work and holidays. The dresses of men were not different from that of the country, it changed more slowly and for the turn of the century it became urbanised.

The girls received a new dress every holy communion (six times a year). The richest families had even 20 dresses. These women expressed their wealth by their dresses, which included expensive materials and decorations. The ornaments depended on the material of the dress. Silk was brought from Lyon, France, the pearls and headdresses from Bohemia.

A Völgység

Völgység is the popular name of this region. We only have written sources of using this name since the end of the 17th century. Before this era, in the Turkish years this huge territory belonged to the castle of Szászvár. After the expulsion of the Turks the settlements belonging to the castle of Mecseknádasd were called the district of Nádasd. The small Bonyhád (Bohman, Bachnyám, Bonyhan, and then Bonyha) has been a market town since the Middle Ages, where people could cross the marshland in the directions north-south and east-west. The administrative borders have changed in the last 250 years, so the official and the popular borders have always been different. The historical Völgység is only a historical-ethnical concept. It is bordered by streams and waters: Hidasi-water running at Tevel, the stream of Völgység at Bonyhád, Hábi channel in the Hegyhát region of Baranya County, and Kapos river in the west. The region was characterised by Hungarian, Kraut, Serb and Jewish populations and cultures for centuries until the end of the Second World War. These populations and the relocation of the Transylvanians are present in the architectural monuments and folk traditions of the region as well.

Museum of Völgység

Besides the traditional exhibitions, presentations and museum club several other programmes like book presentations, temporary exhibitions, and crafts workshops can be attended.

Grábóc

Serb orthodox church and monastery from the 17th century
The one and only remaining Serb orthodox monastery church of the country was built between 1736-41, in Baroque style. The tower was finished in 1761. The iconostase was painted by Vaszilie Osztójity in 1768. The wall pictures of the church and the stuccos were prepared in Baroque style at the end of the 18th century: the frescos were painted in 1784-85 with the leadership of Andrej Saltist. The contemporary furnishings - two side-altars, the bishop’s chair, the prebends and the chairs were also prepared in Baroque style. A relic of Saint Borbála is kept here. In 1994 the Serb church got back the church and the monastery which was operating as a social home. The Serb orthodox monastery in front of the church was built in 1787 in Baroque style. Its façade was transformed and later restored between 1981 and 1987. The significance of the Serb monastery of Grábóc grew far beyond the borders of the county. It was the spiritual and religious centre of all the Serbs in the Carpathian Basin. It was founded in 1585, and it operated continuously until 1974 (excluding some years of war), the death of the last monk. The monastery is a significant work of art as well. The monastery is operating again, for some years Serb nuns have been living there, sisters Krisztina and Mária who present the church as well.

Excursion to Szekszárd

"Szekszárd has been the town of wines for 2000 years"

The sights of Szekszárd can be visited on foot. The heart of the town is called Béla tér (Béla square), where we can find a church built in 1805 in Copf style, which is the biggest single nave church in Central Europe. Carillon can be heard three times a day. In front of the church there is a statue remembering the plague epidemic (Szentháromság szobor). The square is bordered by the Town Hall from the west and the old County Hall from the east. The classicist building was planned by Mihály Pollack, it was built in 1836. The inner court presents the ruins of the monastery founded by King Béla I. in 1061, which are surrounded by monastic quarters and a castle. The decorated Wine Fountain can be found in the outer court of the building, from which wine flows at times of important holidays. Some minutes of walking takes us to the birth house of Mihály Babits, the Hungarian poet (Babits u.13.), where a museum is operating. Garay square can be reached in a few minutes as well where we can see the statue of János Garay. The poet presented the literature with the figure of János Háry and wrote about Szekszárd wines several times. The German Theatre is one of the most significant buildings of the square where the only German theatre of the country is operating. The characteristic building of Augusz house is not only an architectural but cultural monument as well (Széchenyi u. 36-40.) which was built by the baron Antal Augusz and visited by Ferenc Liszt 4 times. The synagogue was rebuilt according to the plans of József Kerényi, where today the exhibitions of contemporary and classical artists and high quality concerts can be attended. The monumental building of Mór Wosinsky Museum is located near the building. Several permanent and temporary exhibitions can be seen in the museum founded in 1902 by count Sándor Apponyi and parson Mór Wosinsky. If we have time it is worth to have a look at the hills of Szekszárd from the Observation Tower, which can be reached by a few minutes travel. From here we can see the cultivated vineyards and the small town with its old and new districts.
